Jesus in the Old Testament

Jesus in the Old Testament
This past Sunday we looked to Romans 1:1-7. One of the significant things that the Apostle Paul points out is that the Prophets promised the gospel beforehand in the Scriptures. In other words, Paul sees Jesus all over the Old Testament. But how do we know Paul was right?

We know Paul was right because this is precisely what Jesus said about Himself and the Old Testament. In Luke 24 Jesus encounters two disciples on the road to Emmaus. He walks with them and talks with them for a while about what has been taking place in Jerusalem. Seeing that they do not understand, “...beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself” (Lk. 24:27). Jesus explains Himself, the Christ, from the entire Old Testament.
If Jesus and Paul thought this way about the Old Testament, then so should we. When we understand that Jesus is the fulfillment of the promised Messiah, then it makes the Old Testament much more clear. Jesus is the seed of the woman come to crush the head of the serpent. He is the way that Abraham’s offspring will bless the nations. He is the descendant of David who will sit on the throne forever. Jesus is the Son of God, come to us in human flesh, to redeem fallen man.

We could spend hour upon hour looking to the Old Testament for Christ. The author of Hebrews refers to “types” and “shadows” when looking backwards. Yet, now that Christ has come the shadows fade away because the substance (Jesus) has come. Since Christ has come, you and I can look to the Old Testament and see how so much points directly to Him. So as you read through your Bible, don’t miss Jesus. He is all throughout.

Grace be with you,
