BK’S KORNER
I spent Thanksgiving with my dad and my sister. It was a small gathering, very quiet and peaceful. November 28 was the day that my mother died 3 years ago. Therefore, the day was kind of solemn for my dad. The three of us began to reminisce about mom. We got hung up talking about the food she cooked. Since it was Thanksgiving it would be natural to remember the food she cooked. She used to make what she called “Imperial Salad”. It was like a frozen fruit salad but not exactly. She always made what she called a “Mayonnaise Cake”. This really doesn’t sound good. It certainly doesn’t sound good to me because I don’t like mayonnaise. Really, it was more like a spice cake but she made it with mayonnaise. My dad missed her Fruit Cake. I told him Colin Street Bakery may do the trick, but he insisted it would not. He declared that no one could make it like she did.
As we talked, we were inspired to try to cook some of her recipes. My sister showed me where they had my mom’s recipes saved so we could copy them and try to cook it for ourselves. I’ll be trying a mayonnaise cake at some point over the holidays.
That whole thing is kind of what leaving a legacy is about. It is living your life in such a way that those who loved you will be inspired to do what you did and to live like you lived. My mother also left a spiritual legacy. She exhibited some “fruits of the Spirit” that I struggle with. Specifically, “kindness and gentleness.” My mother was probably the kindest and most gentle/meek person I have ever known. I know in our culture those are not really attributes we celebrate, but we should. They are listed as fruits of one who is being led by The Holy Spirit. You can see for yourself in Galatians 5:22-23. I am hard hearted and often mean and unkind. I desire to be more like my mother. I desire to let the spirit have control of my life like she did. That is a legacy worth leaving.
Please make sure to attend all of the Holiday Services, Fellowships and parties that our church offers during this season. Please make note that there will be a couple of different or new opportunities to study God’s Word coming in the New Year. Mark Manino will begin a Sunday Evening class on Prophecy. I will begin to do something a little different on Wednesday Evenings. I am going to begin to teach a series on what I think are the most important doctrines you need to know and understand as a Christian. Stay tuned for updated times and dates. Plan to attend.
