BK’S KORNER
Cheryl and I have another vacation planned for the spring. I’m going to confess a little here. Usually, at least once during our vacation we get into a pretty heated argument. Here’s the thing. I do something that drives Cheryl absolutely crazy. When she’s finally had enough, she fusses at me. Then I get mad because I don’t like people fussing at me. What is it that I do? Well, I’m a “slow walker.” Seriously. I am and I know I am. I walk slow. It’s not on purpose, it is just the way I move. I move slowly! If you know Cheryl, then you know that drives her insane. She walks as fast as anyone I know. She is always leaving me behind. When she really fusses at me is when people are behind me and I’m just meandering along. I cannot help it. I am a slow walker.
I had to think to come up with something good about being slow. I mean there must be something, right? Ah yes. James 1:19. It says, “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;” (emphasis mine). So here are two biblical times when we need to be slow.
We need to be slow to speak. We shouldn’t be so quick to inject our opinion or our idea. We should not be quick to argue our point of view. Proverbs 17:27 says that we should use our words sparingly and that we should have a calm spirit. When we talk too much. We get worked up. We argue. Sometimes we say things that sound much worse than we intended. It is good to be slow to speak.
We also need to be slow to wrath. In other words, slow at getting angry. Go read 2 Samuel 12. How David had committed sin with Bathsheba. The prophet Nathan confronted him by telling him a story of a man who stole his neighbor’s little pet lamb to feed it to some friends. David was indignant. He burst out in anger only to be confronted with the fact that he was the man! Be careful about letting your anger fly out of you. Proverbs 16:32 says that a man who is slow to anger is better than a mighty warrior. It says if we can rule our own spirits, we are greater than a victorious general.
So, you see there are two times when we should be slow. Slow to speak and slow to wrath. I do not recommend being a slow walker!
I hope you all managed the cold this week. See you on Sunday.
Blessings to you all.
Rule Your spirits.
Rule your tongues.
