Stillness for the Soul

Sunday morning we continued with Psalm 46. We are familiar with one portion of this psalm though it is often misapplied and taken out of its context. “Be still, and know that I am God.” (v.10) We often hear this and find it comforting, but in context it is a harsh rebuke from God. In context this is God shouting for us to quit warring against Him and his will. We cannot win. Therefore, we need to just surrender. As we dealt with last Sunday, if we will delight in God, we will gladly surrender and follow Him. When we do not delight in God, we are actively and/or passively warring against Him.

The opening verse of the psalm declares the truth we need to secure in our heart and live out in our life. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (v.1) Trusting in God is the epitome of wisdom. We all know this fact, but we gravitate toward not trusting. Our recoil from lack of trust is to be busy trying to fix. We use our limited understanding and our limited strength trying to move mountains. We are fighting against God when we are fighting against trusting Him. Can you “be still?” Will you let God be your “refuge?”
