Restoration for the Soul

Sunday morning we continued our sermon series through the Psalms by looking at Psalm 14. David begins the psalm by declaring, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” For many of us we could and would quickly give a hearty “Amen.” However, David is not speaking of others and those who surround him living out life in this harsh and corrupt world. David is making a statement about his own folly and the folly of every person who breathes. We live as fools, as those claiming there is no God, because “there is none who does good, not even one.” Paul later picks up this truth and uses it to add weight to his bold statement, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:26) This truth penetrates the heart of every person and reveals the reality that we are in desperate need of a savior, one who is good.

We can find ourselves doing church, singing songs, and testifying that God is real, but there is a question we must contend with beyond these religious platitudes. Does our actions, our behavior, our choices, our battling of sin, demonstrate there is a God? Do we live in light of his righteous judgment? Do you live knowing that Jesus took God’s righteous judgment upon himself for our sake? Does this make any change in us? Talk is cheap, if we live as if there is no God.
