Putting It on the Back Burner
The “Tell Me a Story” sermon series continues as Jesus tells the parable of the Ten Virgins. Jesus tells of a wedding party waiting on the coming of the bridegroom. The group of ten virgins are divided into two groups, one being the wise and the other being the foolish. The only thing which separates the two groups is the willingness to do work of preparing for the bridegrooms coming. The foolish think that when the time comes they will be able to depend on others for help or act quick enough to overcome their procrastination. The wise have spent the time and effort getting ready so in a moment’s notice, without delay, they can respond to the call of the bridegroom. Being prepared in our heart, mind, and soul to respond to God’s call cannot happen in the moment, but must take place long before the opportunity shows up. A farmer cannot harvest a crop when he is hungry, but must prep the field, plant the seed, and labor for the future harvest even while not hungry or in need. God has opportunities opening for us in the future which we must prepare for now. Are you willing to labor while you wait? Will you be ready when God is? Let us faithfully prepare for what God is doing.
