The Chief End of Man

The Chief End of Man

The first question in both the Westminster Larger and Shorter Catechism is, “What is the chief end of man?” In other words, what is man’s purpose for existence? What is the sole duty and end of mankind? The Catechism answers, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” Man exists to glorify God. We are to live lives that exalt Him above all and to enjoy Him for all eternity. This is the purpose of man.

Subsequently, this is also the purpose of the Church. The Church exists to glorify God. How does the Church glorify God? By obeying His commands. We are to make disciples of all peoples, taking the gospel to every tribe, nation, and tongue. The Church is to hold forth the pure teaching of the gospel; it rightly administers the sacraments; it practices godly discipline for correcting faults. The glory of God is the business of the Church.

Is this your aim in life? Are you about this business? I hope and pray that your desire is to see Jesus Christ exalted in your life, in the life of your family, in FBC, our community, and beyond. As we journey into 2023, may our driving focus be the glory and exaltation of our Lord.

Grace and Peace,
C. R. Hamilton
