Fleeting Moments
Fleeting Moments
“The days are long but the years are short” is something of a truism. We all feel the mundane nature of life from time to time. Most of the time we feel it on a Monday. Sometimes life feels mundane, routine, and even pointless. It is in these moments when we must be reminded that our days are fleeting. Though Monday may seem to drag along there may come a day when we will miss those Mondays in the office.
We must remember that life, in the grand scheme of it all, is short. Moses, in Psalm 90, says that man’s life is 70, maybe even 80 years, yet we are gone in a moment. James describes our lives as a vapor that is here for a moment and gone in an instant (James 4:14). Since life is short then we ought to make the most of it. Those who follow after Christ ought to live in light of the end. We know time is limited so we make the most of it for Christ’s sake.
We must remember that God is glorified even in the mundane, routine things in life. “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Cor. 10:31) When you rise and when you sit, when you work and when you rest, when you do something complex and when you do something mundane, do it all to the glory of God. A mother that changes a dirty diaper for the 27th time in a day can do so to the glory of God. It is this that gives us joy and corrects our perspective when we become complacent because things seem mundane.
We must remember that every day is an opportunity to make much of Jesus Christ. By God’s grace, we gather on the Lord’s Day to be with God’s people. As the gathered people of God we worship our great God. This then fuels us to go and labor for His glory. The engineer, the stay-at-home-mom, the doctor, the lawyer, the pastor, the electrician all have a job to do. The distinction is that the Christian ought to be the one who does their work with the greatest joy in their heart knowing that they have an opportunity to make much of Jesus Christ by laboring for His glory.
We can glorify God on a Monday with our work. We can glorify Him on Tuesday also. Every day, every moment is an opportunity for us to make much of Jesus Christ. Yes, the time is short. Since it’s short, let us make the most of it and glorify God in all that we do.
Grace be with you,
